Grant Calvin's sculpture titled 'Solar Chronograph II'2006 Acquisitive Sculpture Award and Exhibition
The 2006 winners of the UWS Acquisitive Sculpture Award and Exhibition were announced on Friday 6 October at the Campbelltown campus.

Two awards were on offer this year - the UWS acquisitive prize, and the Landcom acquisitive prize - each to the value of $20,000. Landcom are supporters of the 2006 exhibition.

The winner of the UWS acquisitive prize was Grant Calvin for his piece titled ‘Solar Chronograph II’. Winner of the Landcom acquisitive prize was Ron Gomboc for his piece ‘Freedom’. Also Ron Gomboc with his sculpture called 'Freedom'commended for their work were artists Clara Hali for ‘Tribango III’ and Philip Spark for ‘Spire No.4’.

UWS Curator, Monica McMahon, says there is a diverse range of entries this year, with the finalists' sculptures made out of materials ranging from galvanised steel, sail cloth and bronze, to glass, sandstone and recycled metal.

"This competition continues to strike a chord with sculptors in Australia - they find a university campus landscape an inspiring and challenging setting to work with. Some of the finalists specifically created their work for this particular environment," she says.Philip Spark's sculpture titled 'Spire No.4'

"This year's artworks have a particular emphasis on harnessing the elements and interacting with nature. For example, 'Sonar Chronograph II' by Grant Calvin utilises the path of the sun to reflect its daily and seasonal changes, while 'Spire No 4' by Phillip Sparks moves according to the strength and direction of the wind, casting shadows on the ground.”

The two-week exhibition, between 6-22 October, is free and visitors are encouraged to take themselves on a self-guided tour. Staff will be on hand each day between 12-2pm to take guided tours or answer questions. Clara Hali's piece titled 'Tribango III'

The UWS winning entry was judged for its quality and suitability for the University's parkland setting and will be permanently installed on the Campbelltown site, as was the 2004 winner, 'Inara', by Michael Le Grand.

All artworks on display are available for sale. To book into a walking tour or for any further details about the exhibition, please contact Monica McMahon on 02 4620 3450.
